A retro BMX racing flashback, Warrnambool 2017
On the eve of the new race season, starting with the Frankston Helltrack event, in a couple of days time, I thought I would post about the last open meet that we all attended which seems a life time ago, back in May, on the 21st I did the long drive, first thing in the morning, from Carrum Downs, Melbourne out to Warrnambool in Western Victoria a 3 and a half hour one way trip, arriving at 8am in time for practice, I knew it was going to be a long day. Little did I know, that the day was about to turn bad for me in the worst possible way. Retro BMX racing at Portland
Portland BMX club, held the latest round of the Victorian State Series and whilst the pictures of the track taken Friday showed it looked a million dollars and the reports from those that practiced on Saturday afternoon, the weather Gods interrupted the proceedings and put on some terrible weather for all the racers. At about 3am a monsoon hit the area and dumped a tonne of water on to the track, unfortunately this was more than the track could handle, all of the hard work that the Portland track crew had put in was wiped out in one foul swoop. Unfortunately the rained continued for the next several hours and for many of us we got our first taste of Winter that is not too far away. Victorian State Series, Number One
This weekend the 26th of March, sees the Victorian State Series round 3 at Park Orchards BMX club and the over 40 retro has taken an unexpected turn, with an unexpected leader, riding with the number one plate. Who is this unexpected leader you may ask, well it’s me and if anyone had asked me at the start of the season if I thought I would be in the lead or anywhere near it, I would have told them that there was no way and no how, that I would be anywhere near it. Not only am I leading it, but with only 6 riders, racing retro in the 40+ retro this Sunday, I am guaranteed to keep the number one plate into the next round at Portland. How did this happen? Retro BMX racing season is up and running
The 2017 Retro BMX racing season kicked off this week, with the Track Attack series, 6 race meets over 9 days, it is a brutal welcome back to the race season and is a good spring board towards training for the national titles if you plan on doing them. From a personal point of view I decided to only do the two rounds to get some time back on the bike on a track which was sorely needed, other than a few training sessions I haven’t raced since the Victorian BMX state titles in November of 2016. I really didn’t expect too much as the training I have done recently was more based around strengthening my troublesome knee rather than riding fast. Knox Thunderdome 2016 results
Knox Thunderdome is the biggest BMX race event in Victoria next to the Victorian state titles, held over the 5th and 6th of November 2016. Thunderdome attracting a total of 24 entries over the 3 retro classes with the bulk of those entries making up the 14 man field in the 30+ retro class. Six motos and finals over the weekend saw some fast and furious racing. With the Victorian state titles comming up in 2 weeks, Knox Thunderdome was the last chance to race in open competition before the big one and no one was holding back. Simon Anderson was the eventual winner with Michael Herceg and South Australian Ali Scott making up the podium. Closely followed by Neale who had a very consistent weekend with all 7 races in the 37 seconds, 2016 new comer to the retro scene Brendon Marshall was stoked to come in at 5th
