Jelly legs, back in training.

Christmas and the New Year are now behind us and after two weeks off I was back in training with the secret trainer, when I get there I saw all manner of contraptions that were not there when I last trained and it had me a little worried right from the start.

With a grin and a slight chuckle my secret trainer tells me you are going to hate me, not so much today, not so much tomorrow, but come Thursday, you will be in agony, I am interested to know what exactly this agony is going to feel like, because I don’t mind telling you I am feeling it now.

Due to the fact that I have a dodgy right knee, it is fair to say that over the last few years I have done very little with it, as it becomes inflamed and painful after very little exercise, so I was reliably informed that the next several weeks will be based around strengthening the muscles around my knee, so to put it bluntly every Tuesday is leg day…. ah crap.

We start off on a squat rack with the bar bell over my shoulders with no weight, it is not terribly hard to lift but, I had to squat until my bum hit a chair and then back up again, I knew then and there that it was going to be a struggle, but I will do the best I can, unfortunately for me this was just the warm up and the pain and sweat was yet to come.

Next was where things started to get interesting when I was introduced to a new piece of equipment, the TRX suspension strap, leaning back keeping my arms locked, I had to squat and then spring back up and jump, I know what you are saying, “what like jump off the ground”? Yes indeed that it was I had to do, I had to jump off the ground, I am almost 46 years old, for the last several year I’ve always had at least one foot on the ground at any given time, but now I am leaning back on an elastic band and jumping and hoping that the elastic band is not going to break under the strain I am putting on it. After the so call squat jumps I did something called pistol squats, these things are just difficult and if you don’t know what they are, check them out on YouTube. After the pistol squats I got a bit of a break to be told to do 2 more sets, like seriously what the hell, I am going to do 3 sets of jump squats and pistol squats with the elastic band.

Thank goodness when these were finished and I got a chance to walk it off and “shake it out” only problem I didn’t have to shake my legs out as the felt like jelly by now and were shaking of their own accord, the night continued with several other exercises that had my legs wobbling all over the place by the time we were finished. Finally I am told that there is one exercise left to go and it involved my most hated exercise, the one exercise that I dread above all others, yes that is right I had to do push ups.

So my first leg day is done and I am told the pain is yet to come, but if the five steps that lead from my drive way to the front door which I could only take one at a time are any indicator, then I am going to be in for an interesting couple of days and some extreme pain. Hopefully I recover in time for Thursday nights sprint training session, fingers crossed.
