Drawing the line in the sand

Yesterday saw me doing another training session with the secret trainer, this time it was sprint training, I borrowed my garmin from my road bike and strapped on my heart rate monitor so that I would be able to see some of the stats from the session. Let me start by saying that this is the first sprint training session I have done since starting retro BMX racing a couple of years ago and it is fair to say that my legs are feeling it today, but the pain is temporary and I know that within a few weeks of keeping up the training my body will adapt and my recovery will be quicker and this lactic acid build up in my legs will dissipate a lot quicker.

For those that are interested in stats, here are a few to ponder, from a 1 hour training session there was 47 minutes of moving time, my max speed was 33.8 km/h, my heart rate average was 139 bpm and my highest heart rate recorded was 155 bpm, the below graph shows speed, estimate power and heart rate, you can quite easily see each spike in the 3 measured stats during each sprint.

This got me to thinking, what do I want to achieve from these work out sessions, where do I want to improve, how do I measure that improvement and this led me to drawing my line in the sand, right this is what I am going to do, this is how I am going to do it and this is what I am going to achieve, with that in mind I went through 2 years of history of open meets that I have participated in and noted my best lap time at each track, then figured out my short term goal and my long term goal for 2017.

Track Best Short Long
Eastfield 51.602 48.00 44.00
Park Orchards 49.873 46.00 42.00
Lilydale 50.108 47.00 43.00
Wyndham 57.363 53.00 49.00
Geelong 50.265 47.00 43.00
Shepparton 58.972 54.00 49.00
Sunbury 55.832 52.00 48.00
Knox 46.711 43.00 41.00
Frankston 51.146 47.00 42.00

With anything I have done in the past whether it be, personal life, sporting life or business life, I’ve always thought the best way to go about things is to set goals, set steps that need to be achieved to reach those goals, work out what you are going to do to achieve those goals and then get out there and do the work to get there, as fellow retro race Danny Booby would say, dream, believe and achieve
